THE CREATIVITY & COGNITION STUDIOS REQUIRED GRAPHICS FOR TWO OF THEIR EXPERIMENTAL SPEECH PATHOLOGY APPS: SPEECH INVADERS AND YAKMAN.
With an endearing nod towards the 8-bit arcade games of the 80s, these apps aim to help people improve their vowel sounds through voice-controlled game play. Pixel characters and icons were developed for the games including four types of antagonists: an explosion, a gunship, and a giant pair of red lips – all animated in full 8-bit splendour! Splash and menu screens were also designed to give the games a unified interface and inspire play.
A promotional video was also produced to show the games’ potential and spread the word! Thanks go to game developer Andrew Bluff (aka Rollerchimp) for video sound editing and composing the cute retro soundtrack. More info on the research project can be found over at Rollerchimp headquarters.
You can download Speech Invaders and Yakman for free from the Apple Store as we speak!
