Exploring Exxopolis – an inflatable multi-chambered structure installed on the Sydney Opera House forecourt – was an unexpected sensory treat. Its circus-like exterior (complete with tantrum-throwing toddlers in long queues) belied a serenely organic interior. Moving through the colour diffused passageways, sliding along the smooth stretched plastic surface with bare feet, pressing against the curvaceous walls and nestling into womb-like pockets culminated into a fully immersive and mood altering experience. It was as if we had been incorporated into the system of a living breathing entity – an enlightened being – kind, benign and serene. Such connotations of religion and nature, and inspired use of light would surely even impress the renowned 19th/20th century architect Antoni Gaudi if he were alive today.
